3 〔のぼせて落ち着きを失う〕 get [become] nervous; panic; get [suffer] stage fright; get paralyzed with fright [embarrassment].

●試験で上がるといい点が取れない. If you panic [get nervous, get in a panic] during an exam you can't get a good score.

・舞台に出る前に, 上がらないよういつもおまじないを唱える. Before I go on stage I always recite a spell to protect myself from stage fright.

4 〔取りだされて目につくところに出る〕 appear; come [be brought] up; be mentioned; be listed; be on a list.

●議長候補に君の名前が上がっているよ. Your name has been mentioned for the chairmanship. | Your name is (included) on the list of candidates for the chair.

・議題に庁舎移転問題が上がった. The question of the removal of the government office to a new building appeared [came up, was mentioned] on the agenda.

・なかなか手が上がりませんね, 問題が難しいのかな. No hands seem to be going up [Nobody is putting up their hands]; it's hard, is it?

・証拠が上がってるんだ, 白状しろ. We've got [found] (the) evidence. Confess!

・犯人が上がってほっとした. I'm so relieved [It's a great relief] that the culprit has been caught [arrested].

5 〔一斉に声が発せられる〕

●どっと歓声が上がった. There was a great cheer (from the crowd).

・市長リコール問題は市民側に凱歌が上がった. A song of trumph went up among the citizens over the question of the mayor's recall.

・試合終了のホイッスルと同時にわが校の応援席から鬨(とき)の声が上がった. As soon as the whistle sounded to end the game, a whoop went up from our school's cheering section.

・期せずして聴衆から「万歳」の声が上がった. A spontaneous cheer of “banzai” went up from the audience.

・あちこちから「反対」の声が上がった. Opposition arose from all [many] quarters. | There was opposition from various groups.

6 〔収益などが生じる〕 arise; be produced; come about.

●働いたら働いただけの利益が上がる. The harder you work [The more work you do] the more you get out of it [benefit, profit]. | The rewards for work are proportional to how hard one works [how much one works, the amount of work (carried out)].

・田畑から上がる収入を頼りに生活している. They depend for a living on what the fields provide [the benefits arising from the land].

7 〔終わる・完了する・出尽くす〕 finish; stop; end; come to an end; be completed [finished]; come to a conclusion.

●息が上がる get breathless; run out of breath; 《口》 get puffed

・月経が上がった. She (has) reached the menopause. | Her periods (have) stopped.

・乳が上がった. Her milk (has) stopped coming. | Her breasts (have) stopped producing milk [dried up].

・雨が上がった. The rain stopped [ceased]. | It stopped raining.

・車のバッテリーが上がってしまった. The car battery has gone dead [flat].

・仕事は 5 時に上がるから待ってて. I'm finishing [going off duty] at 5, so wait till then. | This job will be over [done] at 5, so hang around.

・やっとピアノ練習曲集の 1 冊目が上がったところだ. I've finally finished [got through, completed, graduated from] the first book of piano exercises.

・忘年会は 1 人 5,000 円で上がった. Our year-end party cost just \5,000 each. | The bōnenkai came to \5,000 each.

・旅行の費用が安く上がって助かった. It was a great help the trip being cheaper [costing less]. | The fact that the trip cost less than we expected really helped.

8 〔召しあがる〕 eat; drink.

●どうぞ遠慮なくあがってください. Do start. | Please don't wait. | There is no need to stand on ceremony; do start eating [drinking].

9 〔参る・伺う〕

●近いうちにこちらからいただきにあがります. I'll come and collect it [them] soon. | I'll visit you [pay you a visit] to collect it in the near future.
